The story of Black Forest Bakery began in Pforzheim, a town in the Black Forest Region of Germany, when a young, ambitious and passionate Werner Speer started his apprenticeship in the mid-forties just after WWII, at the tender age of 14. In 1970 he arrived in SA, and in 1976 Werner and his wife bought Café Echo, a small coffee shop in Loveday Street, Johannesburg.
